Powis Castle

Powis Castle and Gardens provides an excellent day out. It is owned and maintained by the National Trust.

Follow the following link for more infromation

If you visit Powis Castle please take the opportunity to visit Charlies Stores - its just down the road. Charlies is not maintained by the National Trust - but locally they love this store, worth visiting (they serve food and have a soft play area for the kids).

Breeding pair of Red Kites stay at the barn

Red kites are regularly seen around the property

Red kites were previously on the point of extinction however now there are thought to be at least 600 breeding pairs in the UK, many of which are in Mid Wales.

we are fortunate enough to have a pair living int eh woods opposite the barn which means that whilst you enjoy a cup of tea in the warmth of the sun room you can watch the pair collecting nesting material and feeding - bird watching does not get more comfy than this.

Visit the Welsh Red Kite Trust for more information.

I took the photo above - if you manage to get a better shot then please send it to me!

Llanfair light railway

This railway runs from Llanfair to Welshpool

A great way to see the surrounding countryside whilst enjoying a narrow gauge railway. Kids love it.

Either start in Llnafair and go to Welshpool or do it the other way around. There is a cafe in Llanfair although if you want to keep your costs down then there is a picnic area for the packed lunch. Wear some older clothes since it can get sooty.

What does Yr Hen stabl mean?

Yr Hen Stabal means old stable. Yr in welsh means "the", Hen in welsh means "old" and Stabl is of course stable. In the past (long time ago) the stable would have housed the horses of the adjacent property. My family have used the barn for a number of purposes including rearing calves, rearing pigs, storing corn and even accommodation for some sheep shearers from New Zealand (probably the toughest job!). Since the property has been converted then no animals will be found in the property (including pets - sorry).

And if you are wondering what the photo shows? - Its the master bedroom!

Fresh Snow

Tons of fresh snow, with drifts on the top of the hill. Over twenty trees had fallen across the road and we had to cut our way through - tough work for a four year old!
